Goldenrod
Recognised by its bright yellow blooms, goldenrod (Solidago virgaurea), also known as European goldenrod, is a herb with a long history of traditional use.
What Is Goldenrod Good For?
The best-known Goldenrod benefit is linked to kidneys and the lower urinary tract. Goldenrod can support normal urinary elimination functions and help maintain a healthy urinary tract.
The herb naturally contains a range of plant compounds, most notably flavonoids, saponins, phenolic acids, and tannins. These constituents remain the focus of ongoing research into Solidago virgaurea, although current knowledge of the plant rests largely on its traditional use rather than on large-scale human trials.
Goldenrod Extract, Capsules & Tea
The aerial parts of the plant, meaning the flowers, leaves, and stems, are harvested and used in preparations such as Goldenrod extract, capsules, and goldenrod tea.
Goldenrod tea is the classic preparation, brewed from the dried aerial parts of the plant. The herb is also offered as a liquid or dry goldenrod extract and in capsule form, where the plant compounds are delivered in a more concentrated and convenient format.
Goldenrod dosage depends on the preparation and its concentration. The urinary elimination benefit is associated with an intake equivalent to 6–12 g of dried herb daily.
Goldenrod Side Effects & Precautions
Goldenrod is generally well tolerated, though individual sensitivity deserves attention. Anyone with a known hypersensitivity to goldenrod or to related plants in the Asteraceae family, such as daisies, ragweed, or chamomile, should avoid it.
